Why a Blog Instead of Social Media?

January 2, 2026 by Paul Crowe Leave a Comment

Do you read blogs?

In recent years, social media has dominated the web and all of the smart people said blogging is dead. Well, I disagree. There is a certain kind of blog, the one where bloggers share intimate details of their personal lives, trying to impress visitors with their recent exotic trip or expensive purchase, those blogs have moved to Facebook or Instagram, maybe YouTube or Tiktok. Some have gone to Substack, a sort of social blogging platform, instead of setting up their own website under their own domain.

But the bloggers with something more to say, those often longer essays or explanations of complex events or substantial opinion pieces, where writers prefer not to operate under a platform’s arbitrary rules and algorithms, those blogs are still very much alive. To me, “Blogging is social media for thinking people.”

The decline of social media

Much of social media (I’m looking at you, Facebook) quickly descends into chaos if a topic offends someone. What you say may not even be seen by your followers because of the algorithm and if you say the wrong thing, you may be suspended temporarily or permanently. An increasing amount of content on those sites is generated by AI, you may be outraged by something that isn’t even real and the ads you see may be outright scams. Why would anyone want to be there?

Businesses beware

Many businesses have their entire web presence on Facebook. They think everyone is there and they get more exposure that way, but they run a terrible risk. Anything you put on Facebook can be removed by Facebook, even your entire website. They don’t need a reason, they can simply say you broke the rules and you’re done. Your web presence disappears and there’s very little you can do about it.

This site is 100 percent HI, Human Intelligence

With the rapid expansion of AI into every nook and cranny of the internet, this site will stand apart, it will be me, my writing, 100 percent HI, Human Intelligence. There’s no need to wonder. Unless I am using AI as an example where it will be clearly identified, everything you see here will be real.

Treat yourself to something more substantial

Instead of reading online trolls fighting with one another over trivial nonsense, take a break and read something a bit more thought provoking or informative. I can’t guarantee that everything here will be of personal interest to you, but I’ll do my best to make sure your time here isn’t wasted. Your comments on any post are appreciated and over time, we may have some great conversations.

So set a bookmark in your browser and check back often. Now, I have some work to do.

Blogging – it’s social media for thinking people

"Great Minds Discuss Ideas. Average Minds Discuss Events. Small Minds Discuss People."
~ various

"One of the painful signs of years of dumbed-down education is how many people are unable to make a coherent argument. They can vent their emotions, question other people's motives, make bold assertions, repeat slogans -- anything except reason."
~ Thomas Sowell

“He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion ... Nor is it enough that he should hear the opinions of adversaries from his own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations. He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them ... he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.”
~ John Stuart Mill
